Negotiation Skills

Here are nine skills for proper negotiation.

1. Set Clear goals.

Before the negotiation set your goals.

Make them clear and distinct.

By entering this negotiation, what do you want to achieve?

2. Prioritise your goals.

Take your list of goals and put them into priority order.

Categorise your goals by putting them into four subsets.

  • Must have
  • Want to have
  • Would like to have
  • Would prefer

3. Make a list of your bargaining chips.

You need to make out a list of your negotiable variables.

Make a list of all the things you can offer the other party and put them into order of value.

4. Write your negotiation strategy.

When you have assembled all the above information, write your negotiation strategy. This is your plan of action during the negotiation.

During the negotiation:

5. Become a Master communicator.

Always maintain a calm and professional manner.

Be clear in your language, rational in your actions and positive in your intentions.

6. Resist the temptation to give things away for free.

Negotiators never give away anything for free. They trade concessions. They don't give them.

7. Say 'No' to their first proposal.

If you say yes to their first proposal, you will never hear their best offer.

8. Be adaptive and responsive.

Keep your eyes and ears open. Notice the changes in their mood and reactions. Be prepared to change your plan if the evidence suggests it may be wise to do so.

9. Keep written records.

Keep accurate records of what is agreed. Who is doing what, by when?
