How can you learn to improve your leadership skills?

Answer: You can improve your leadership skills by: Identifying the distinctive attributes that make leaders different from non-leaders; name the distinctive attributes of leadership; and then strive to practice these attributes until they begin to become part of your daily habit patterns of thought, speech, and behaviour.

If you learn to think, speak, and behave as a leader, then you would become a better leader.

So the steps are:

1. Identify and name the attributes of leadership.

2. Consciously practice the attributes of leadership.

3. Consciously practice them until they begin to be habit patterns.

4. When they have become habit patterns, then you will have become a person with leadership potential.

What are the distinctive attributes of leadership?

The distinctive attributes of leadership are many, but the most important are the following six.

1. The ability to set a worthwhile and ambitious goal and the tenacity to stick with that goal until it has been achieved; this is to become a "Goal focused individual". A leader must have a goal focused mind.

The leader must stick with the goal for as long as it takes to achieve it.

2. The ability to communicate your worthwhile and ambitious goal to other people, so that they will want to get involved and help you to achieve it. A leader, who cannot gather any followers, is a sad fellow, indeed.

3. The ability to formulate a "practical and detailed plans of action" that will be capable of achieving the worthwhile and ambitions goal. There are many people who have goals, but have no idea how to achieve them. This is plainly, not a good situation. A Much more powerful situation is to be the person armed with;

  • A worthwhile and ambitious goal.
  • A group of people who are willing to help you achieve it.
  • A practical and detailed plan of action that will be capable of achieving the goal.

These are the skills of leadership.

4. The ability to deal with internal dissent and conflict.

Conflict is inevitable within the team. You will have people who don't always agree. Sometimes they will disagree. Sometimes people can be disagreeable. Yet the team will function well, only to the degree to which, perfect harmony exists within the elements making up the team.

If the team is disharmonious, fractious, always fighting amongst themselves, and dividing themselves into warring subsets, then the overall team performance suffers and the goal will not be attained.

It is the role of the leader to be able to harmonise the various conflicting personalities within the group and to unify the fractions that naturally occur when people come together.

The leader must learn to handle conflict.

The leader must be able to take the emotion of a conflict situation and replace it with reason.

The leader must be able to negotiate solutions between conflicting demands and personalities.

And the leader must also know when he (she) must not compromise and must stand firm.

The leader must be a good conflict manager.

5. The leader must have the ability to manage his- her own emotions. They must be able to manufacture a positive mental attitude. The leader must be able to manufacture feelings of:

Confidence. Strength. Enthusiasm. Motivation. Self belief.

The leader must act as the source of emotional strength for the rest of the team. But from where does the leader draw his - her- own strength?

Answer: The leader draws it from within.

Leaders are able to manage their own emotions and are thus able to create the emotions of strength; Enthusiasm; Motivation and Self belief as an act of will.

This leadership skill requires a certain degree of understanding of the role of thought in success.

Leaders understand the power of thought.

Leaders think about thinking.

Leaders are psychologists. They have to be.

Leaders understand their own psychology and they understand the psychology of others.

They know what makes people tick.

Leaders are able to manage their own emotions and can inspire the positive emotions in themselves.

6. Leaders are able to inspire the positive emotions in other people.

As stated above, the leaders can induce strength and confidence in themselves.

They use that strength to induce the same feelings in others.

Leaders have the ability to make other people feel better; feel stronger, more confident, more enthusiastic, more able, more motivated.

Leaders are able to make the team believe they can win, even in the face of adversity.

Leaders know that people will only attempt what they believe can be done.

If they don't believe it, they won't try their best.

But if they don't try their best then they won't achieve it.

If the team believes, then it can achieve.

So the leader works hard to make the others in the team believe that the team is;Strong, able, and good.

This is a leadership skill to be developed by you.

Summary

Here are the six main leadership abilities and skills.

1. The ability to set a worthwhile and ambitious goal and the tenacity to stick with that goal until it has been achieved; this we call, become a "Goal focused individual".
