What is Your Purpose?
Everyone needs a purpose. Without a sense of purpose, people feel unfulfilled.
What is your purpose? We would like to suggest that you adopt the following two purpose statements:
- To "Add value to others".
- To "Actualise your full potential".
1. Your purpose is to "add value to others".
We all have the same fundamental purpose, that is "to add value to the world".
The only way in which we can live in a harmonious society, is if we add value to each other, your family, friends, customers, employer or community. If you make adding value to others, a main purpose in your life, then four good things will happen:
- You will have a positive impact on others around you.
- You will become more respected and well-liked.
- Your work life will succeed, since "satisfying customer needs", is the root of commercial success.
- Your relationships with loved ones will improve.
2. Your purpose is to "actualise your full potential".
Part of your mission is to ACTUALISE your full potential. If you choose to waste your potential, you are wasting your greatest asset. Your purpose is to discover how good you can get at helping others, and as a result, improving your potential.
Develop the Six Major Keys of Rational Optimism
Perfect these six skills and you will be fully equipped to add more value to yourself and others.
1. Clarity of purpose: Goal focus
The ability to create clear, long range and valuable goals and to commit to them for as long as it takes to achieve them.
As opposed to drifting with NO clear goal; hoping that good fortune will smile on you.
2. Excellent communication skills
The ability to accurately explain your ideas to others, in such a way that they will understand you, agree with you, and will act in accordance with your ideas.
As opposed to excessive miscommunications, misunderstandings and disagreements.
3. Be a rational planner
The ability to analyse facts and formulate detailed, logical, written plans of action, that can achieve the goal, in the most efficient manner possible. Time management, prioritisation, delegation, and prevention.
If you have no plan and need to react to circumstances you will always feel that you are fire-fighting.
4. Use rational conflict management
The ability to resolve conflicts according to the principles of reason; the ability to harmonise the various personalities in the team, so that they are more able to synchronise their actions and be more likely to reinforce and complement each other.
5. Inspire and motivate yourself
The ability to maintain a positive mental attitude; a positive state of "rational optimism" and realistic self-confidence, even during tough times. As opposed to losing your self-confidence after a criticism or after a series of defeats or setbacks.
6. Inspire and motivate other people
The ability to inspire the positive emotions of self-belief, optimism and confidence in the minds of the other members of the team; and to do that especially during tough times. As opposed to allowing excessive negativity, pessimism, cynicism, anger or fear to take hold of the team and weaken its spirit.
Decide Who You Want To Be
One of the most positive things that you can do for yourself is to consciously decide how and who you want to be. You can exercise your power of choice; you can choose whether you will be lazy or industrious. You can choose your words carefully, or you can say things that are ill-chosen and cause damage.
You don't have to be what others expect. You don't have to be like your parents or your friends. You can change into whatever you choose to be, simply by using the power that is already inside you. The power to choose your thoughts. But please choose wisely and choose consciously.
Decide how you want to be. Decide who you want to be; decide how you want to relate to others, decide how you want to conduct yourself and then, live by those decisions, every day, even on the days that you don't feel like it.
