Training new skills for team leaders

To develop your team leaders, you may need to give them some specialised training designed to give them the practical skills that will allow them to effectively lead the team.
In order to successfully lead the team you need to develop and practice six key skills.

The six key skills of leadership and management are:

  • To set realistic goals.
  • To clearly and accurately communicate your message.
  • To be able to plan ahead and manage your time.
  • To handle performance issues and give constructive criticism.
  • To self-inspire and develop self-confidence.
  • To inspire confidence and motivation in others around you.

Let us look at each:

All team leaders must have the quality of Goals focus.

Goals focus is a mental state. It is the act of thinking about the goal, as opposed to simply reacting to current circumstances.

Describe your goals using SMART


Goals must be:

  • Specific: the goal should be defined numerically.
  • Measured: the progress towards the goal should be tracked carefully.
  • Achievable: The necessary abilities must be present in the team.
  • Realistic: The necessary resources must be gathered.
  • Time deadline driven. A reasonable deadline must be agreed.

3. Time management

All team leaders and managers need to be great time managers.
Time management is the P list.

  1. Planning.
  2. Prioritisation.
  3. Preparation.
  4. Prevention of avoidable error.
  5. Delegation to proper person.

You need to train your managers in this area of skills.

4. Giving constructive criticism and negative feedback

If you are a manager you need to be able to give feedback. Both positive feedback and negative feedback.

Negative feedback is difficult because it can be constructive criticism or destructive criticism.

Your managers need to know how to give constructive criticism.
They need to help people to make positive changes as a result of negative feedback.
Your managers need to know how to word their message so that their "negative feedback" is taken in the correct way and therefore results in a positive change in behavior.

5. How to inspire yourself

Since managers are often under pressure, then you need to know how to stay positive and inspire yourself. You need to be able to create and sustain a positive mental attitude in yourself.
Managers should not be negative. They need to remain positive especially during tough times.
You may need training to show you how you can create and sustain a positive mental attitude, especially during tough times.

6. How to inspire the others

The team leader must be able to inspire positive attitude in the team. The team leader must be able to create and sustain the right team atmosphere. There needs to be a positive attitude in the team, since the teams attitude will tend to affect the productivity of the team.

  • If the attitude and atmosphere is negative, then the team wont produce well.
  • If the attitude and atmosphere is positive then the team will produce more.

The six key skills of leadership and management are:

  1. To set goals.
  2. To clearly communicate.
  3. To plan ahead.
  4. To give constructive criticism.
  5. To self-inspire and develop confidence.
  6. To inspire confidence and motivation in others around you.
