How to Make This Year your Best Year Ever

How to make this year your best year ever

How to make 2016, your best year ever

You may have noticed two things:

1. That Christmas and New Year are both fast approaching AND

2. There is a lot of pessimistic talk about next year being a bad one

The first statement is a certainty: Christmas and New Year will surely arrive: and probably bang on time.

The second statement is NOT a certainty: 2016 does not have to be a bad year:

In fact: 2016 could be your best year.

How could 2016 be your best year ever?

By you DECIDING to MAKE it your best year ever!

We presuppose that: YOU are the most important factor in what happens to you next year.

  • We know that Her Majesties Governments decisions will affect your year, but not as much as your decisions will!
  • Greek and Italian debt will affect your year, but not as much as your debts will.
  • Half a degree of Climate change may affect your year: but not as much as the degree of your change will.

YOU are the most important factor in what happens to you next year.

So YOUR actions will be the most potent factor in how 2016 turns out.

If you do more of the right things, 2016 is more likely to be a good one. And don't do so much of the wrong things: then by your own actions, you can stimulate a set of results which will mean that you can have a great year. If that is true: then we need to identify the two lists:

3. The things you need to do in order to have a great year

4. The things you must be sure NOT to do, in order to have a great year.

Here are two such lists

The things you need to do in order to have a great year

  1. Decide where you want to be in one year from now.
  2. Decide what knowledge you need to gain
  3. Decide what skills you need to develop
  4. Decide who you should spend your time with
  5. Decide to be healthier

Let's us examine these:

1. Decide where you want to be in one year from now

Before 31st December 2015, sit down and figure out what it would take for you to be successful in 2016.

If success means "the achievement of a goal", then you need to specify a goal, in order to even have a chance of achieving it.

Yet most people don't set specific goals.

The first thing to do is to grab a sheet of paper and a pen and start writing out your goals for the next 12 months, 2016.

Set four major goals

  1. One for your professional work life
  2. A NON work life
  3. A Social personal achievement goal
  4. One for your health; how you look, how you feel.

2. Decide what knowledge you need to gain

In order to progress you must evolve:

In human terms, Evolve means gaining knowledge.

One reason you have not reached all your goals so far, is that you don't yet know enough.

I.e. If you knew how to, you would do it.

SO decide what lack of knowledge is holding you back: and resolve to learn more about that specific topic.

Become an expert in your field.

3. Decide what skills you need to develop

If knowledge improves the content of your mind: then skills pertain to the practical application of knowledge. (You might know about pianos: but can you play one?). You might know about the importance of clear written communication but can you communicate clearly in writing? Decide that you are going to practice what you preach. Practice skills until they become a part of your dally habit patterns: habits that will lead you towards your goals.

4. Decide with whom should you spend your time People affect you in many ways: both good and bad. Some people you know are good for you.

  • They encourage you
  • They lift your spirits
  • They bring out the best in you

Make a list of three people who do that. Resolve to increase the amount of time you are in the company of inspiring people. You don't even have to know them personally. There are many inspiring people to whom you can gain access via o books o audio o you tube clips It makes good sense to immerse your mind in a world that is populated by only the best you can find.

  • The best artists
  • The best musicians
  • The best philosophers
  • The best technicians
  • The best friends

5. Decide to be healthier

You are to some degree a biochemical device.

If you don't treat the device correctly, then it won't work correctly.
If you maintain and service, the bio-mechanism correctly it could last you 100 years
If you don't, it won't

So set a new higher standard for your physical body.

  1. Improve your nutritional habits.
  2. Construct a productive training programme that fits your personality: and then apply it for at least the whole of 2016.

Part II

The things you must be sure to NOT do in order to have a great year 2016

You can do all the right things and still mess-up by adding in a few bad things.

You can ruin a perfect cake by adding into the recipe, only one slug.

One slug will do it.

There are many people who are doing many right things, but mess up in one area that is enough to ruin the whole thing!

And notice that some slug- errors are so common that they seem to be normal behaviour.

But don't mistake normal behaviour for "intelligent behaviour".

Here is a list of slug errors.

1. Alcohol

Avoid using too much alcohol or other drugs. It is so common that it is "standard practice".

But too much alcohol (or ANY drug) will be enough to cause you to ruin a perfectly good day.

And if you have enough bad days, (or waste enough days) then you won't have a great year.

Avoid alcohol

2. Avoid careless language

Most trouble you get into is partially caused by what you say.

  • It is very easy to say the wrong thing.
  • It is very easy to say the right thing but in the wrong way.

Don't talk yourself into trouble.

When you are angry, learn to say less.

When you don't know what you are talking about, learn to say less. Don't waffle.

You rarely get into trouble for NOT saying something.

More often, you get into trouble for what you did say.

During the Second World War, there was a slogan that said: "Lose talk costs lives".

That is a good slogan. Avoid careless talk.

3. Avoid any form of dishonesty

Dishonesty is enough to sink your chances of having a good year.

Don't cheat

Because in the long run you can't win, by cheating.

Dishonesty can come in many forms:

Dishonesty with property: Examples: theft, deception.
Dishonesty with information: Examples: Lying, bending the truth, wilful omission.
Dishonesty in relationships: Examples: cheating on a partner in business or in love.

Dishonesty with yourself: Examples: lying to yourself. Evasion. Any form of dishonesty is a slug-error.

  • Be honest with yourself
  • Be honest in your business
  • Be honest with your partner
  • Be honest with money

4. You must not get ill or injured

For 2016 to be your best year ever: You must not get ill or injured.

So, look after yourself!

Eat well.

Each evening, when you get into bed, do so in one-piece; stronger, and more knowledgeable than when you woke up.

If you do that, every day, for the 366 days of 2016,

Then 2016 may well go down in the records as "Your best year ever".

Make it so!
