G.A.M.E: Goals, Attitude, Method, Energy


Goals are the starting point of all achievement.

Goals need to be:

  • Ambitions
  • Worthwhile
  • Valuable

The goal must be clearly communicated

In order that the goals are clearly understood, you must use language that is:

  • Specific
  • Defined
  • Numerical

The goal must inspirational

You should provide good reasons why the goal is worthy. If you don’t supply good reasons, then the team won’t be motivated to achieve the goal.
Reasons come in two forms: Positive reasons and negative.

So, you should list all the pleasurable benefits we enjoy if we achieve the goal.

And you may wish to list the painful penalties we will suffer if we don’t.
(The carrot and the stick).

Please note: Most people respond better to positive motivations.


Your attitude is the sum of your thoughts, feelings and beliefs about any issue.
You have attitudes towards everything and everyone.
Attitudes can be positive, negative or mixed.

Attitudes affect results because attitudes affect actions, (and actions affect results).
Positive attitudes are one of the causes of high performance.
Negative attitudes are one of causes of poor performance.
Positive and negative attitudes tend to create their corresponding results.

How to Develop a Can-Do attitude

It is important to develop a Can-Do attitude.

What is the Can-Do portion of the job?
What can be done and how?

Be wary of spending too much time discussing the NO-Can-Do portion of the job.
What cannot be done and why?

Intelligent Action. Observe Feedback. Adaptive Change.


Persistence is the quality of resilience. People with persistence do not give up in the face of setbacks, disappointments and temporary defeat.

They simply rewrite their plans and come back stronger.

Persistent people do not see failure as failure, but rather as feedback.

High performance teams treat setbacks as feedback- not as failure. They use feedback as a means of informing their next adaptive change to their actions.

This is the essence of persistence. Action, feedback, change.

The Course Training Method

The training method follows this general pattern - the training is very interactive and interesting:

  1. The trainer gives a clear explanation of the point in question with specific examples.
  2. Then, the delegates practice by doing an exercise with each other.
  3. The delegates practice by doing an exercise with the trainer.
  4. All points are supported with full written notes to take away.
  5. Delegates are asked to write down an associated action, for each point made.
    (At the end of the day, we have about twenty such actions, from which the delegates choose six which are the most personally meaningful).

Note: we do not believe in placing people in any situation of embarrassment by demanding that they 'perform' in front of the whole group. So you can relax: come on this course and be at ease; ready to learn new skills!

After the course, how can you keep the training-momentum going?
