Four main leadership qualities

What is it that makes a good leader and how can I improve my leadership skills?

Answer: There are fundamentally four leadership skills.

They are as follows:

  1. A clear vision or goal.
  2. An ability to communicate and "Sell" the idea of the goal, to others.
  3. An ability to develop a plan of action that is able to achieve the goal.
  4. The ability to develop sufficient courage and determination to back the plan with persistent action and never to give up, until the goal is reached.

Let us look at each one.

1. A clear vision or goal

The leader is the visionary person, who has in mind a picture that represents a description of a better future. All leaders have a vision of a better future.

All leaders speak of a better future that will be achieved if the other people will only follow the vision.

Look how Winston Churchill uses a vision of the future being brighter.

You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word:

Victory.

It is important to make sure that you have a clear vision of what you want five years from now.

Then, work backwards, from the vision, building the plans of action that you think will give you the object of your desire.

2. An ability to communicate and "Sell" the idea of the goal to others

All leaders have to be sales people. They must be able to persuade others that the goal is a good one; one worth pursuing.

All great leaders are great communicators. They have to be. Nobody will follow you if you cannot communicate to them and "sell them" on your ideas.

It pays you to study communication. You must stimulate the minds of your listeners with a description of the challenges that excites the imagination.

I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

If you would be a better leader, then be a better communicator. Study language.

Perfect your use of English.

3. An ability to develop a plan of action that is able to achieve the goal

Having a goal and having a team will take you only so far.

Now you need a plan.

You need a plan that cannot fail.

All leaders are incessant planners.

From this day forward, Flight Control will be known by two words: 'Tough' and 'Competent.' Tough means we are forever accountable for what we do or what we fail to do. 4. The ability to develop sufficient courage and determination to back the plan with persistent action and never to give up, until the goal is reached

Leaders have persistence and the willingness to work for as long as it takes to achieve the goal that they have set for themselves.

Assuming that the goal is a big goal, then you will need to develop the resilience to withstand the inevitable setbacks and disappointments that you will face over time.

Some people call this bulldog persistence.

The skills of leadership are as follows:

  1. A clear vision or goal.
