What Skills Do I Need to Develop?

What Skills do I Need to Develop?

If you want to continue to progress in life, then you need to provide your boss, your customers, your suppliers and your family, with your best possible performance.

We all need to give to others, our best possible performance.

In order for us to give our best, we need to continually improve our personal skills, knowledge and abilities.

In addition to being experts in our chosen field of endeavour, we need always to be improving in six universal skills. These skills are universal, in the sense that they apply to everyone. They apply to you, no matter what industry you work in, and no matter what is your product or service.

The Six Universal Skills of Personal Effectiveness

Irrespective of your particular product or service, all effective people share the same skill-sets. They have perfected their abilities in the following:

  1. Skills relating to setting and achieving goals.
  2. Clear communication skills: Accurate language, both in the written and spoken form.
  3. Time management: Planning, prioritisation and delegation.
  4. Rational conflict management: How to handle difficult people and difficult situations.
  5. Self management: Self motivation. Self-confidence. Self control. Positive mental attitude.
  6. Emotional management of others: The ability to inspire others to feel more optimistic, enthusiastic and motivated. The ability to create and sustain a positive work atmosphere.

To the degree to which you excel in the universal six skill sets listed above, is the degree to which you will get the best performance from yourself and others. If you are lacking in any one of these skills, then you will not get the best performance.

Question: Have you perfected yourself in all six universal skills sets? Probably not, because nobody has.

Six questions for you to ponder

  1. Have you perfected the art of setting goals and achieving them?
  2. Have you perfected your use of language and communication? Or do you sometimes have trouble expressing yourself?
  3. Are you always meticulously prepared, with everything worked out and planned in advance? Or do you sometimes feel ill-prepared to meet the challenges that you face?
  4. Are you able to handle difficult people and conflict situations in a calm and rational manner, or do you sometimes lose your temper or your cool?
  5. Have you mastered the art of self control? Have you mastered your own emotions? Can you give yourself confidence, and motivation and enthusiasm? Or do you sometimes feel your emotions take control of you; do you sometimes seem to be at the mercy of your own feelings.
  6. And in relation to other people, have you perfected the art of gaining the cooperation of other people, or do you find other people to be part of the problem, rather than part of the solution?

If you think that there is some room for improvement in your current levels of expertise in:

  • Setting goals,
  • Communicating clearly,
  • Planning logically,
  • Handling conflict professionally,
  • Self control and motivation,
  • Gaining the cooperation of others, then...

We would like to invite you to attend a two day training course designed to improve your ability to get the best performance from yourself and others, by concentrating on developing these six skills.
