Special Theory - S.M.A.R.T. Targets

S.M.A.R.T. TARGETs

Clarity of purpose

The first and most important ability for a leader manager is to provide a sense of "clarity of purpose".

Purpose statement

A written document that identifies the reason for the team's existence.
The purpose statement identifies the "target to be hit". Without a clear purpose the team fragments.

Clear standards

The standards are "rules of engagement". What is right and wrong, acceptable and unacceptable. Must be applied to all members the same way.

Communicate the goal and the standards to all members

Standards must be communicated to every member of the group. SMART Targets These are individual tasks. They are in accordance with the purpose and the standards SMART means: Specific - The goal should be described with numbers. Measured - Which numbers are you going to track? Achievable - By reference to the person's skills and knowledge. Realistic - By reference to the person's current context. Time deadline - Put a deadline on it. If you do not, people will procrastinate. Three occasions to use SMART Targets.

  1. As a method of setting your own, personal goals.
  2. As a method of delegating a task to another.
  3. As a series of questions that you ask your boss when he/she delegates to you.

"If you want to live a happy productive life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things." Albert Einstein (German born American Physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity. Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. 1879-1955).
