The ability to inspire others

The ability to inspire others to act with a sense of rational optimism, and as a coordinated union, to follow the plan and achieve the goal, in the most efficient manner possible; this is what we call Inspirational leadership.

This six part essay covers the six major themes of leadership and management development. The six themes are as follows.

Your leadership and management development programme needs to be centered on the six essential leadership management skills, namely the ability:

  1. To set and achieve your goals.
  2. To communicate clearly.
  3. To manage time and prioritise, and delegate work.
  4. To manage conflict and handle difficult people.
  5. To create and sustain a positive mental attitude, especially during tough times.
  6. To inspire others and create a positive, productive atmosphere.

Let us now look at part six: the ability to inspire others: To inspire others to act, with a sense of rational optimism, and as a coordinated union of people, to follow the plan and achieve the goal, in the most efficient manner possible.

All leaders need to inspire the rest of the team to feel motivated to achieve the goal for which the team exists.

Question: How can the leader inspire "the troops" to act, with a sense of rational optimism, and as a coordinated union of people, to follow the plan and achieve the goal?
Answer: the leader must manage the daily conversations so that the vast majority of the conversations are consistent with the success formula.

What is the success formula?

The success formula is a sequence of steps that describe successful action.

All successful action is successful because it follows an invariable pattern. Anyone who follows the success formula will succeed.

Now this is valuable information. What is the success formula?

Here it is:

  • Purpose.
  • Plan.
  • Action.
  • Feedback.
  • Change.

1. The Purpose: is the goal.
2. The Plan: is what you are going to do about the goal.
3. The Action: is the implementation of the plan.
4. The Feedback: is the results of the actions you take. Feedback comes in two flavours: bitter and sweet. Positive and negative.
5. The Change: is the adjustment in the plans and actions, based on the feedback results you are getting.

The leader manager keeps the conversation on the five elements of the success formula.

Question: How does the manager do that?

By what means can you condition the minds of every member of the team to act in harmony with the requirements of the success formula?

Answer: Every day ask the members of the team the following Success Formula Questions and expect them to be able to give you six plausible answers.

What are the Six Success Formula Questions? (6SFQ's)

Here they are:

  1. What are your major definite goals for this coming week, (month, year....)?
  2. Where are your "detailed, written plans of action" that describe exactly how you intend to achieve your goals?
  3. What have you been doing lately, in terms of achieving your "major definite goals" and acting on your "plans of action"?
  4. What have been the recent feedback results: What has been going well for you lately?
  5. What has not been going so well for you?
  6. In respect of what has not been going well, tell me, what specifically do we need to adapt, improve or change, in order to get things back on track? Please, give me the details.

In order to condition the minds of every member of the team to act in harmony with the requirements of the success formula, every day, use these six questions to trigger success formula thoughts, feelings, actions and results.

Since you feel whatever you think about, then these questions will tend to cause the team to think about and therefore, feel emotions that are consistent with the success formula.

Question: Is there a failure formula?

Yes. Here is the failure formula.

  1. No goal focus.
  2. No plan of action or insufficient planning.
  3. No action, or insufficient action, or procrastination.
  4. No checking of feedback. Not recognising when you are doing it wrong.
  5. No changes. Refusal to change, even when it is obvious doing it that same way again will not work.

The team leader must be sensitive to the elements of the failure formula in himself and in other members of the team and must take immediate action against it.

This is how to lead the team.

For your memory sake, here are the six primary leadership skillsets together with the success formula... Each of the following skill sets are essential skill sets for the leader manager.

The ability to:

  1. Set goals and achieve them within the agreed time limit.
  2. Communicate with accuracy and clarity.
  3. Plan ahead; meaning, the ability to formulate practical plans of action, properly manage their time and prioritise tasks.
  4. Handle conflict situations and difficult people.
  5. Self-motivate and inspire a sense of self confidence and personal initiative.
  6. Inspire others to act, with a sense of rational optimism, and as a coordinated union of people, to follow the plan and achieve the goal, in the most efficient manner possible.
