How to Set and Achieve Goals

How to Set and Achieve Goals

If you want to accomplish anything in life, you must set goals. Here are the ten steps to set and achieve goals.

  1. State your goal in a single sentence.
  2. Specify your goal numerically.
  3. Define your goal by writing a detailed description.
  4. Decide how you will measure the feedback, to determine whether you are making progress or not.
  5. Make a list of the personal abilities, skills, information and knowledge you need to gain, to achieve your goal.
  6. Make a list of all the physical resources that you need; money, technology and people.
  7. Write down the time deadline by which you want to have achieved the goal.
  8. With the information you have gathered in the above steps, formulate a detailed written plan.
  9. Implement the plan with gusto, and keep a close-eye on the feedback results, both positive and negative.
  10. Continually improve the plan according to the feedback results. Return to step 9 and repeat until you achieve your goal.

Goal Setting : How to Set and Achieve Goals

1. State your goal in a single sentence.

Name your goal in an affirmative statement of positive intent. For example:

  • I want to start my own business.
  • I want to get in shape.
  • I want to make more money.

Write your goal onto the cover of a book in which you will keep all your notes relating to this project.

2. Quantify your goal numerically.

Take your original statement and specify your exact meaning by quantifying the goal numerically.

For example, if you wrote, "I want to get in good physical shape", you need to describe that goal numerically.

  • What body weight are you now?
  • What weight do you wish to be?
  • How many calories do you eat per day?
  • How many should you eat?
  • How many hours do you spend exercising?
  • How far and how fast do you run?
  • What is your waist measurement? etc

Quantify your goal numerically.

3. Define the goal by writing a full detailed description.

Not everything can be described numerically.

You may need to write many paragraphs to explain what you mean.

For example, if your goal was to "Create a beautiful living space for my family" then you will need to write a detailed description of what that phrase means to you.

Almost all words are open to multiple interpretations.

In order that you can effectively communicate your exact goal, you need to specify your exact meaning.

4. Decide what you will measure as feedback, to determine whether you are making progress or not.

As you work towards your goal, you will need to measure your progress. So you must first decide what you will take as the measure.

Going back to the goal of getting in shape; What are you going to measure? Will you measure your;

  • body weight?
  • waist size?
  • resting pulse rate?
  • bench press?
  • how far you run?
  • how fast you run? etc

You can't measure everything, but you must measure something.

So decide, what will be the measure of your success?

5. Make a list of the personal skills, information and knowledge you need to gain, to achieve the goal.

In order to achieve your goals, you need more knowledge.

Knowledge is power.

Make a list of all the things you don't know, that you need to know and get to work gathering information, skills and experience.

Remember, ignorance is NOT bliss.

The more you learn, the more you earn.

6. Make a list of all the physical resources that you need.

You need to acquire additional resources. You need sufficient money, the right technology and the right people.

  • Make a list of all the people who can help and guide you.
  • Make a list of all the technological systems you will need.
  • Make a list of how much money you will need and where you might obtain it.

7. Write down the date by which you want to have achieved the goal.

Now decide, by when do you want to achieve this goal.

Make a deadline.

A goal without a deadline is in danger of becoming a fantasy.

8. With the information you have gathered in the above step, formulate a detailed written plan.

With the information you have accumulated in the preceding steps, you now sit down and write a full, detailed plan of action, indicating what you will do, when and with whom.

Success requires detailed plans.

9. Implement the plan with gusto, and keep a close eye on the feedback results, both positive and negative.

You have the plan in your hands; you must now implement the plan with full passion, enthusiasm and with an expectation of final victory.

Note the word "final".

Your final victory probably will not be instantaneous.

When you implement your first plan, some of it will work well and some of it won't.

That is normal. We call it "positive and negative feedback".

Note the feedback carefully.

10. Amend the plan according to the feedback and return to step 9 and repeat until you achieve your goal.

Not all elements of your first plan will work well.

No plan is perfect first time.

Learn the lessons of the defeats you incur and write a better, more refined plan.

That one may suffer the same fate as the first. Some of it will work well and some of it won't.

Keep repeating the process of feedback - change the plan - action - feedback - change the plan.

Take these steps and you will achieve your goal.
